Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of true education." At Walker Elementary, we strive to make students smart and good. With this in mind, we have partnered with Samford University to implement a school-wide character education program. This program places a special emphasis on performance and moral character traits. These traits will aid students in life long after their formal education ends. Long ago, Aristotle stated "educating the mind, without educating the heart, is no education at all."
With this in mind, Walker Elementary staff and students agreed on four core values for the school. All students and staff are expected to be Respectful, Accountable, Motivated and Self-Controlled. These core values guide our expectations in all areas of the school. This is the RAMS WAY! Our school touchstone revolves around these four core values and is recited each morning, during school events and during team meetings.
We also have character education teams. All students and staff are on one of four teams: Red, Blue, Green or Purple. These teams meet as grade levels weekly to learn about different monthly character traits. The purpose is to not only know the definition of the traits in the mind, but also to understand it with the heart and have the opportunity to practice it with the hands. Walker also has a mentoring program where younger students are paired with older students. These meetings happen periodically during our weekly character meetings. Once a quarter, we have a school-wide character pep rally in the gym!
At Walker, students are encouraged to take part in service projects. Each grade level has adopted a different community partner. We understand the importance of giving back and strive to make our community better. Our PTSO plays a vital part in this endeavor.
Each year we listen to our students, parents, staff and community and make changes based on this feedback. We are committed to helping our students achieve their highest potential in the classroom and in life. We Are RAMS!
